D.GRAY-MAN
D.Gray-man is a manga series created by Hoshino Katsura and is currently being published in Weekly Shounen Jump. The anime version premiered back in 2006 with new episodes airing on Japan's TV Tokyo every week.

The series takes place in late fictional 19th century and centers around 15-year-old Allen Walker, an exorcist with the ability to control divine weapons known as Innocence. With that, Allen joins the Black Order, a religious organization led by the Vatican that hones exorcists in a war against the Millenium Earl. The Earl is determined to purify the world by exterminating everything on Earth. To do this he leads his own army of Akuma, which he creates by taking advantage of grieving people and stealing their bodies, and the Noah Family. This war is a race to collect all the Innocence (most of all the "heart") before the Earl does.

ALLEN WALKER
"I want to protect those I can."

The fated "Destroyer of Time" and the protagonist of the series. Allen is a young British boy with a cheerful, polite disposition. He carries a strong sense of right and wrong, even going so far as to express care and concern for the souls of Akuma. Despite his past hardships, Allen is generally a caring individual with an above average appetite.

Allen's Innocence is located in his left hand, which caused it to develop rough-looking, red skin and black nails. Because of these deformities, Allen was abandoned by his parents and then adopted by Mana Walker on Christmas Day. When Mana died, Allen was so distressed that he made a deal with the Millenium Earl to bring back his adoptive father. Mana turned into an Akuma and attacked Allen, slashing his left eye, cursing him for making him into an Akuma. Allen's Innocence reacted and destroyed the Mana-Akuma, but the curse upon his left eye remained and allows Allen to see the trapped souls of Akuma in otherwise normal looking humans.

After these events, Allen was picked up by General Cross Marian, who taught Allen how to control and use his Innocence. Cross eventually runs away and tells Allen he should go join the Black Order and become an official exorcist.

YU KANDA
   "We are destroyers. Not saviors."

Kanda is an 18-year-old, Japanese exorcist with a very different personality than Allen. Despite having a pretty face, Kanda is outright rude and cold towards everyone and anyone. He claims that "sacrifices must be made to save things" and believes that duty comes before emotions. Beneath that exterior, though, he has his own way of showing his care for others even if he doesn't admit it.

Kanda's past is still pretty unknown in the series. We do know that he's searching for a mysterious person and that he was admitted to the Black Order at a young age. His Innocence is embedded in the sword Mugen and he was trained by General Froi Tiedoll.

Located above his heart is a tattoo that resembles an Om script of some sort. This tattoo allows Kanda to heal wounds and make a full recovery in a short amount of time. It appears to be connected to a lotus flower that he keeps inside an hourglass in his room. Every time he uses the tattoo's power, it drains some of his life energy, and when all the petals of the lotus fall, Kanda will die.

ALLEN & KANDA
On the surface, Allen and Kanda generally dislike each other. Their opposing personalities and beliefs sparked dispute from the very beginning. While Allen believes in protecting everything he can, Kanda believes that sacrifices are the only way to save things especially in war. This leads Kanda to think of Allen as nothing more than a naïve child.

Kanda is the first exorcist Allen meets when joining the Black Order and the first he is assigned on a mission with. Kanda attacks Allen when the gatekeeper detects his cursed eye as an Akuma. Even when Allen states that he's been sent by Cross Marian, Kanda is relentless and continues to attack until he is stopped by Supervisor Komui Lee. Afterwards, Allen tries to introduce himself, but Kanda simply states, "who would want to shake hands with a cursed person?"

When Allen and Kanda are assigned to a mission in Italy, Kanda blatantly states that if Allen is holding him back, he won't hesitate to leave him to die. Despite these words, he ends up saving Allen later on and they both work together to defeat the Akuma. In another arc, when Kanda is fighting the Noah, Skin Boric, Allen volunteers to stay behind with him and help him defeat the enemy (even though Kanda chases them all away in the end).

During their (usually childish) arguments, Kanda calls Allen "bean sprout" as an insult to his height and makes fun of his white hair, saying he looks like an "old man." Allen usually retorts back with remarks about Kanda's "feminine" features and girly hair and/or calling him "Bakanda" (a mixture of the words "baka," meaning "stupid," and Kanda's name).

It's clear that Allen and Kanda are quite opposites and definitely not on the best of terms with each other, but they do show that they care and respect each other in their own little ways. I'd like to think that they both have impacted each other and helped the other to grow and open up even just a tad. Their relationship is unique in the story, and if nothing else, it's always amusing to see them at each other's throats every so often, haha.
